The 4th that does not disappoint

For years, I have been plagued with crummy 4th of Julys.  Julies?  No, definitely Julys.

As a kid, someone was always sick, or it would rain, or someone would blow up into a fight, or I would rip my capris open from the belly button to the knee while at the fireworks with a thousand people, or I burned my hand, etc, etc.  Since married life, things haven't improved much.  Our dog was bitten by something poisonous and went into anaphylactic shock and almost died, Bart had a freshly broken back another year, last year I had just started to miscarry pregnancy the day before. Seriously?  Not a good record.

This year?  So. Much. Better!

We started the morning off grocery shopping at Wal-Mart.  Because honestly, what is a major holiday without a last second trip to the store?  Followed by a long nap, and then a party at my sister's house.

And everybody knows....a successful party always includes ridiculous amounts of delicious food and things that explode.

There was bike riding.  Well, sort of.  Bike sitting.

Dave spent a lot of time ROLLINUPINTHEESCALAAADE

There were tender brotherly moments.

There were lots of cousins and new friends for Dave to play with.

There were bald nephews.

Yes, he is 2 1/2 years younger than me, and he is my nephew.

There was shrapnel.  We all got pelted a time or two.

There was the annual pre-firework play, written and performed my my nieces....and my sweet sister Sarah that coaches them in proper voice projection techniques....and she even reads a line or two herself.

 There were mamas....
 And daddys....
And there were fireworks.  Oh, how there were fireworks.

There were oohs and ahhs.

And abnormally large sidewalk chalk, naturally.

And the highlight of the evening...three grown men stealing the toddler's scooters for a downhill race....
Accidentally dangerously close to exploding fireworks.....

And to top it off, it was a beautiful clear (ok, pretty hot) night!

We are redefining the 4th of July celebration around these parts.........can't wait for next year!
